ORIGIN: Munnuru Kapu is a subcaste of the Kapu community, which is primarily a Telugu agrarian Community in southern India. Munnuru Kapu community is the single largest influential Community in Telangana and constitute about approximately 24% population in the Telangana region. For centuries, the Munnuru Kapu have been cultivating the majority of the agricultural lands in the Telangana Region as traditional farmers, and have played a crucial role in the development of a self-sustaining agrarian based economy in the region.
HISTORY: Many centuries ago, 300 Kapu families were sent from the present day Andhra Region to Hyderabad State[citation needed]. Before the end of the Kakatiya Empire, there were incessant attacks on the Empire from the Muslims. The culture and the warfare of the Muslims were new to the Kakatiya rulers. To counter the Islamic invasion at the request of the rulers, a team of 300 top strategists and warriors was sent from Tanjore by the rulers of Kakatiya, who had won a recent victory[citation needed]. These 300 men, known as "Samsthanams," and their families moved to Kakatiya Empire and were absorbed into the society.
After the fall of the Kakatiya Empire, the Munnuru Kapu had Samsthanams with them mostly in and around present day Warangal. They became powerful generals in the Army, administrators in several kingdoms, small business owners, small and large landowners, and politicians and had representation in all streams of society. Before 1947 they were in the forefront of the Aryasamaj Movement in independent India.
The Munnuru Kapu fight against the Nizam in several ways. They are Hindu supporters, popularly known as Patels in the villages of the Telangana region due to their ownership of agricultural land.
MEANING: Munnuru Kapu is a combination of two Telugu words: Munnuru, which means 300 and Kapu meaning protector during War and Agriculturist during Peace Time which appears to be a caste classification given in the later period of the Kakatiya Empire in present day Andhra Pradesh, India.
POPULATION: The Munnuru Kapu population is concentrated in the districts of Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, and Khammam of the Telangana Region, and a significant population is also present in other Telangana districts such as Medak, Nalgonda, Mahaboobnagar, Rangareddy, and Hyderabad.Munnaru Kapu also reside in the Nanded, Chandrapur, Yeotmal districts of the Marathwada Region of Maharashtra State and the Bidar, Gulbarga and Raichur districts of Karnataka State. Their mother tongue is Telugu.
